Having finished their Bachelor of Fine Arts, Honors in Dance from Simon Fraser University, Jullianna’s interests lie in perception of identity, and the passage of information and non-verbal communication expressed from one body to another. She was a Commissioned Artist for the Festival of Recorded Movement (2022), and was in residency with Evergreen Cultural Center as part of their Emerging Creators Incubator (2023). Photo Credit: Mikela Vuorensivu Artist Statement With movement, dance, and choreography serving as a home base for me, I situate my work in relation to embodied listening - to others, to the offerings of new technology and media, and to my own lineage and ethnicity. I welcome creation and practice from a place of slow processing, where I can let things evolve as they naturally do, through marinating, ruminating, and melting. Listening to what my own subconscious body holds has also brought me to reflect on my experience being a mixed-race Japanese-Canadian. Absorbing what others have to say about the ethnic guessing-game I provoke while also spending time processing the history of Japanese-Canadians in Canada informs a portion of the movement-based personal projects I undertake. Wanting to find the medium of art that fits each project most has urged me to explore other modes for conversing and conveying the information I’ve absorbed beyond the modes of dance and movement. Thus, some of my recent works largely exist in the realms of sound, projection, and film. Through whichever medium of art I may navigate, I am eager to share tidbits of experiences and encounters I have gotten to listen and bear witness to over time. I use this embodied listening process to urge my audience to deep dive into small nuances they may not have noticed before, whether this be in themselves or in others, positioning the viewer as a fly on my own wall.Photo Credit: Tiffany Au https://julliannaoke.ca/artistic-works Tue, 15 Oct 2024 16:43:18 +0000 Jullianna Oke https://julliannaoke.ca/artistic-works “Put Me in Your Place” – [In Development] Put Me in Your Place is a work-in-progress dialogue of self-identity and otherness through both movement and real time projection - building the idea of a second body, composed of how we are perceived to those around us. In exploration with some programming around delaying and degrading/eroding an image, certain movement patterns and rhythms in the body can be read in this system as a second figure or person. While this movement piece is “one” choreography, can be projected as “two” images in real time; one being how someone sees themselves, and the second being this “otherness” of how we are perceived - slightly different than the original and not quite there, but with fragments of the original. Essentially, a real-time duet between myself and my “otherness”. No longer able to follow an audible trail, the withdrawal of reverberation sabotages your spatial awareness. The chamber it comes from is a working process aimed towards the physical embodiment of deep listening and reverberation. The body exists as a container and chamber for residual sound to occur, while also being placed in an audio environment for play and exploration. Surrounding oneself in the overwhelm and being submerged into this live, reactive, and resonant world, all elements introduced into this chamber space serve a body trying to attune and orient itself. Call and Response is an immersive installation exploring the interaction of movement, visual art and projection through refraction and reflection. The work begins from a question: How can the act of deep listening be translated into visual mediums? The projected movement of my body serves as a call, while the mylar and the surrounding environment of moving light provide a visual response. The refractive and reflective qualities of the mylar create a textured surface that interacts with light and movement, and the crinkled mylar backdrop acts as a conduit, catching and bouncing the light from the projection of the dance performance. Together, this dance of both light and motion transforms the space into an exchange told through movement, refraction, and reflection.
